CHATHAM – Researchers with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy have spent a good portion of the summer and early fall on the water researching great whites in the area.

Researchers have confirmed 55 new great white sharks in the area this year; those numbers will be used to help wrap up year one of the organization’s five year population study.

“It’s really significant that the scientists have access to the sharks in this year, and that’s why our organization is supporting this type of research,” said Atlantic White Shark Conservancy President and Co-Founder Cynthia Wigren, “it’s groundbreaking,” she added.

In addition to the 55 new sharks, the organization is in the process of compiling statistics on how many returning sharks were in the area this year.

“It will be significant now to see how many of the sharks that were identified this year are back next year,” Wigren said, “that’s just information to build on for the next four years.”
