WELLFLEET – Barnstable County Commissioner Sheila Lyons is running for the Cape and Islands state Senate seat.

Lyons joins Truro resident Julian Cyr and Brewster Selectman Ben deRuyter as Democrats seeking the seat.

Harwich resident and Republican Anthony Schiavi announced his candidacy for the seat last month.

The Cape and Islands Senate seat is currently held by Senator Dan Wolf, who is not seeking re-election.

Lyons has been elected twice to the Board of Barnstable County Commissioners and has served as Vice Chair and Chair during her tenure.

Lyons said that her time on the board has reinforced her belief that regional solutions, especially on the Cape and Islands, bring greater benefits.

“I feel very ready to go to that state house, not only to learn about the issues and the complexities behind those issues, but I would be able to speak with knowledge and with experience on those issues and bring that foray into the state house,” said Lyons.

Lyons added that her focus is on a number of issues including wastewater, housing and the opioid epidemic.

“I have the experience to hit the ground running at the State House and will bring the state-level support we need to move forward. The problems we face are complex, and, with the support of the Cape and Islands residents, I will continue to face them head on”, said Lyons.

In January 2014, Lyons convened the Regional Substance Abuse Council to begin to find solutions to halt the opioid crisis.

As Chair of the Regional Network on Homelessness, Lyons helped create a regional network of organizations to develop strategies to prevent and end homelessness.

“I have done a lot of work, served county government for almost 10 years and I’ve worked very hard on a lot of the issues facing us and I’m ready to bring it to the next level,” said Lyons.

The state senate district encompasses parts of Barnstable as well as the towns of Mashpee, Dennis, Yarmouth, Chatham, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, Provincetown, and all of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
