BARNSTABLE – Barnstable County Sheriff James Cummings said he needs new high tech scanners to combat the problem of smuggling at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility.

Cummings said prisoners hiding contraband in body cavities is becoming an increasing problem.

When deputies suspect this the prisoners are taken to a separate facility for a search.

“Currently what we are doing is when we have information that someone may be hiding contraband, we take them up to the Worcester Sheriff’s Department where they have one of these scanners up there.”

The scanners cost about $250,000 dollars.

Cummings said he is exploring funding options for the scanner. He said they are necessary to prevent overdoses, such as one that occurred earlier this fall, and other problems at the jail.
