HYANNIS – Scientists with the Silent Spring Institute will discuss their latest research at an event at Barnstable Town Hall on October 13.
Their latest research is on chemicals of concern in drinking water on Cape Cod and a new biomonitoring project for tracking people’s everyday exposures to common household toxics.
A new publication, co-authored by the Institute, found that more than six million Americans are exposed to unsafe levels of PFOA and PFOS contaminants in their drinking water.
The findings came shortly after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced in May that it had lowered its drinking water guideline for PFOS and PFOA, prompting the Hyannis Water System, to take steps to reduce the levels of the chemicals in their systems.
The scientists will present an overview of the study and describe a new study underway with the Center for Coastal Studies to measure PFASs and other emerging contaminants in Cape Cod Bay estuaries.
The event will be held from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Barnstable Town Hall, second floor hearing room.
