Six Rehabbed Sea Turtles from Cape Cod Released

Stranded Turtle 7-17HYANNIS – Six endangered sea turtles who were stranded on Cape Cod last year, were released Thursday on the eastern shore of Maryland.

The juvenile, black-shelled Kemp’s Ridley turtles were stranded last autumn due to hypothermia and were successfully treated at the New England Aquarium’s sea turtle hospital.

The turtles were released in 76 degree water, in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd.

Over six weeks in November and December 2014, New England Aquarium’s rescue team re-warmed and treated 733 cold-stunned, endangered and threatened sea turtles.

The average number of sea turtles treated during this annual event is usually 90.

Of the 733 sea turtles admitted to the Aquarium’s sea turtle hospital, seven remain recovering from pneumonia, organ complications, bacterial infections and orthopedic problems.

The Aquarium rescue staff hope to release all of them in mid to late August from the south side of Cape Cod.
