SANDWICH – The proposal to build a skate park in Sandwich has gotten a little bigger.
The original design had a projected cost of $1.15 million and is now $1.4 million.
The money would come from the Community Preservation fund, but other sources, such as grants and sponsors, could offset the cost.
According to Recreation Director Guy Boucher, another proposed project with outdoor activities is now part of the skateboard park effort.
“The Community Preservation Committee though it would be best for both to combine them and come up with an overall project including the skateboard park, Walking trails, pickle ball and tennis,” he said.
It will also have a shaded barbecue area.
With three other major projects needing CPA funding in the coming months, Chairman Stephen Hayes has expressed concern that adding the huge park request could leave them strapped for years. Obtaining grants of up to $400,000 is a possibility.
Boucher said one of the additions is quickly gaining in popularity. “Pickle Ball is the fastest growing sport in the country. We’ve just, quite frankly, outgrown the facility that we have,” he said.
The town is hoping that the site, which is highly visible and close to police and fire department personnel, will not host the illegal activities, like vandalism and drug use, that its predecessor did.
The CPC should have their final vote by March. If approved, it will then go to the selectmen who can include it in the May town meeting warrant. If the article passes, the money will become available on July 1st.
