Locally Produced Film “Straws” To Be Featured at CARE Event

YARMOUTH PORT – CARE for the Cape and Islands is participating in Cape and Islands STEM Week by holding an event this week at Cape Cod Community College. At the event, a screening of the documentary “Straws” will be featured. The documentary is a locally produced film showcasing students taking action against plastic in the ocean.

Student films about their work with STEM-rich institutions will also be screened followed by a discussion.

CARE says it is estimated that 500 million straws are used daily in the United States alone. Plastic straws, caps, food wrappers, beverage containers and cigarette butts are among the top ten items found during beach cleanups.

Many of the items can take 400 years or more to degrade, harming marine life and human health.

The event is scheduled at Cape Cod Community College on Wednesday evening from 5-7 PM.
