Sandwich Special Town Meeting to Decide On Water Quality Solutions

SANDWICH – Voters in Sandwich have been asked to decide on a solution to the town’s ongoing water quality issues at a special town meeting Saturday.

The town is proposing a Water Infrastructure Investment Fund (WIIF) to raise enough money to find a permanent solution to the problem.

A 2-percent surcharge would be imposed on taxpayers to fund the town’s approach of resolving the issue through the town’s Comprehensive Water Resources Management Plan, which is expected to last about a half-century.

If approved at the town meeting, the 2-percent surcharge would still need to be put on the ballot in May.

The poor water quality in Sandwich can be attributed to high levels of nitrogen present in the water, a problem many Cape towns are exposed to.
