‘Spooky Stories’ to be Told at Historic Nantucket Jail

NANTUCKET – Halloween is fast approaching and residents and visitors on Nantucket will have the chance to get spooked at a historic island jail.

The Nantucket Historical Association and the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket present “Spooky Stories at the Old Gaol” on Wednesday, October 26 at 6 p.m. at the NHA’s Old Gaol property on Vestal Street.

The event is all-ages and family friendly and features costumed actors telling themed stories with the Old Gaol property as a backdrop.

Actors from the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket participating include Casey Boukus, Christie Cure, Chuck Gifford, Pam Murphy and Peter Sendelbach.

Admission to the event is $5 per person and tickets will be sold at the door. Space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Audiences will be seated on the ground and are encouraged to bring blankets to sit on.

The NHA’s Old Gaol, which opened in 1805 and housed its last prisoner in 1933, is one of the oldest extant jails in America and is the oldest remaining intact jailhouse on Nantucket.

The town deeded the property to the NHA in 1946 and it underwent a year-long restoration in 2014.
