SSA Hiking Vehicle Fares to Vineyard

NANTUCKET – Travelers bringing vehicles between Woods Hole and Martha’s Vineyard will be paying more for the trip and rates at the Authority’s parking lots will be increasing as well. At a meeting on Nantucket yesterday, the fare increases were announced.

Proposed increases include raising the rate for a sedan from $68.50 to $80.00 in season for those not traveling on an excursion fare. Vehicles over 17 feet in length would see an increase from $78.50 to $90.00 during season, off season rates are not subject to the hike. Freight rates would see the same increase from current fares. Walk on passenger fares will also remain the same at $8.00 for adults. The Board said they were looking to increase income by about $7,000,000 in order to beef up the Authority’s capital fund which is operating with very low margins, according to the SSA’s comptroller Gerald Murphy.

SSA Spokesman Sean Driscoll said the Authority is also bringing back the popular ten ride commuter books for walk-ons, the books were discontinued due to concerns of misuse of the discounted tickets.

The last increase in fares for vehicles was in January of 2013 and for excursion rates the last increase was in January of 2015. At the meeting, the Board also disclosed some of the results from a recent analysis of the line by outside consultants. Discounted excursion rates are offered to island residents.

The assessment came to the conclusion that the grounding of the Woods Hole in March, the report found that the incident was due to mechanical failure and beyond the control of Steamship employees.
