State Athletic Officials Investigate Alleged Racial Slur Case

MATTAPOISETT – A probe is underway by state school athletics officials to see if a hockey player at Old Rochester Regional High School used a racial slur against a black hockey player from another team.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) is investigating whether a student-athlete on the Old Rochester Regional (ORR) varsity hockey team allegedly made the comment against a black Wareham High School player during a recent game.

In a statement, Old Rochester Superintendent Douglas White said the district, which oversees all public schools in the towns of Mattapoisett, Marion and Rochester, is investigating the incident as well.

“This allegation is deeply disturbing and wholly inconsistent with the high standards of behavior demanded from our student-athletes,” White said.

“Old Rochester Regional School District is working collaboratively with Wareham Public Schools, the MIAA and law enforcement to respond to this allegation consistent with applicable laws and school district policy.”

The superintendent declined to comment further on the incident or investigation, citing “confidentiality rights of the parties involved.”

Requests for comment have not been returned by the MIAA or Wareham Public Schools.
