State Awards 30 Grants to Improve Farm Food Safety

State House - 2BOSTON – The state has awarded 30 grants totaling $200,000 to Massachusetts Farmers to install practices that improve food safety within their operations.

Many of the grants will help commercial oyster farmers prevent foodborne illness.

“The Commonwealth’s agricultural industry is growing and consumers have an increased interest in eating locally produced nutritious food,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “These grants will allow farmers to implement infrastructure upgrades to ensure that food safety risks are managed, marketplace needs are addressed and their businesses continue to grow.”

  • Sheila Avery of Wellfleet received $3,000 for four insulated vats
  • Barnstable Lady Oysters in Hyannis received $750 for two insulated vats
  • Baye Blanche Oyster, Co. in Dennisport received $8,000 for an ice machine and an insulated vat
  • Craig Canning in East Sandwich received $11,000 for plastic micro bins for fresh cranberries
  • E&T Farms, Inc. in West Barnstable received $1,763 for an ice machine
  • Ebbwater Sea Farm in Brewster received $1,639 for an ice machine
  • Grey Lady Oysters in Nantucket received $5,000 for two vats and an ice machine
  • Margaret Jennings in Wellfleet received $1,922 for an ice machine
  • Martino’s Seafood in Vineyard Haven received $1,678 for an ice machine
  • The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe-First Light Oyster received $9,500 for a walk-in cooler
  • Mike’s Wicked Oysters in Orleans received $2,598 for an ice machine
  • Pilgrim Bay Harvest, LLC in Plymouth received $3,850 for an ice machine and two vats
  • Pleasant Point Shellfish in Wellfleet received $4,000 for an ice machine
  • Ralph’s Oysters in Wellfleet received $2,175 for an ice machine
  • Rock Creek Oysters in Orleans received $3,000 for an ice machine and ice chest
  • Bill Van Norman in Orleans received $7,125 for an ice machine and two insulated vats
  • Warren’s Cove Oyster Co. in Plymouth received $4,500 for an ice machine and two vats

“These grants will have a large and significant impact on the aquaculture industry on Cape Cod,” said State Representative Sarah Peake. “These grants for ice machines and cooling vats will help ensure that the oysters grown in our waters retain their freshness and arrive at home and restaurant tables as pure, delicious, as safe as possible.”
