WELLFEET – The state has purchased a Wellfleet campground with plans to eventually use part the land to extend the Cape Cod Rail Trail.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation recently bought Paine’s Campground for $3.6 million. The property has 155 campsites on 29-acres
The Paine family will continue to operate the campground for the 2018 season, before the state takes over in 2019.
The state will operate the property as a campground, in a similar manner to the state-owned Nickerson Park in Brewster.
Officials also plan to use the acquisition to extend the rail trail from Nickerson State Park and the Wellfleet property. The work is expected to be completed by 2020.
“The acquisition of Paine’s Campground serves as a great example of Baker-Polito Administration’s commitment to increasing recreational opportunities for the public to enjoy, and the DCR looks forward to providing camping on Cape Cod for years to come,” said DCR Spokesman Troy Wall.
DCR officials say the cost to stay at the campground will likely be half the current rates.
