State DEP Renews Pledge to Reduce Carbon Emissions By 2020

AP LogoBOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection officials say they will act immediately to comply with a court order instructing the agency to develop regulations to cut the state’s carbon emissions by 2020.

The Boston Globe reports DEP commissioner Martin Suuberg said the agency expects to make “substantial progress” toward reducing emissions in 2016 and 2017.

Massachusetts’ high court ruled last month that the state failed to comply with the 2008 Global Warming Solutions Act, which required state officials to issue regulations to curb greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent below 1990 levels over the next four years.

Suuberg says it’s unknown how the DEP will fall in compliance with the ruling until an advisory committee is set up later this month to develop a strategy.
