State Police Cruiser Shot at; Gun Found, But No Suspect 

STATE POLICEFOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Massachusetts State Police are investigating after someone fired a gunshot at a department cruiser.

The cruiser was driving on Route 140 in Foxborough near the Mansfield line around 2:20 a.m. Thursday when the trooper reported hearing a loud noise that came from behind his vehicle. He also saw white smoke.

The unnamed trooper says he saw a white male wearing light-colored clothing in the tree line. The person stood up and ran into the woods.

A search of the area off the highway led to the discovery of a black powder rifle, and other items thought dropped by the suspect.

The trooper was not injured.

Police with dogs searched the area.

The kind of rifle found is usually used for hunting.
