BOURNE – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has issued a draft report that supports replacing both Cape Cod Canal vehicle bridges.
The findings are part of a five-year Cape Cod Canal Transportation Study that looks to improve traffic flow on the Upper Cape.
The final decision on what to do with the aging and obsolete Sagamore and Bourne Bridges will be made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
But the state will have to make corresponding road improvements on both the Cape and mainland side as part of any replacement or renovation project.
The study released this week details several options for changing road configurations around both bridges.
Earlier this week, a bill that could fund the replacement of both bridges was filed in Congress.
The MassDOT study suggests a bridge with auxiliary lanes would be best.
The report’s summary said all the proposed improvements should be considered for project development.
It also said that it is imperative that municipal leadership from Bourne and Sandwich, as well as the Cape Cod Commission, area Chambers of Commerce and members of the broader community continue to coordinate on the project.
