SANDWICH – Massachusetts Secretary of Education Jim Peyser visited schools on Cape Cod last Tuesday, including the Hundred Acre School at Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich.

The school is the first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) preschool in Massachusetts.

Peyser said he came away impressed with the STEM program.

“This is very clearly designed to engage students and engage them in scientific thinking at a very early age which is quite unusual,” said Peyser.

Peyser met with staff and students and was given a tour of the school’s arts laboratory and hypothesis station.

“My goal was to really show him how early childhood education can be viewed as a wonderful vehicle for educating our students all the way from the beginning stepping stones, all the way through their high school and secondary education career,” said School Director Melissa Russell.

The school is open to four and five year old children and engages preschoolers in active learning and preparation for success in school, with STEM used as a springboard to multidisciplinary learning.

Since opening in September 2014, the school offers vacation and summer programs, along with half and full day programs.

Heritage renovated one wing of the Art and Carousel Building in 2014 to house the school, which has a separate entrance and parking area.
