BOSTON – The Massachusetts State Senate voted this week to override 26 of Governor Charlie Baker’s line item budget vetoes, restoring nearly 25 million dollars to the commonwealth’s Fiscal Year 2018 budget.
On Cape, the successful overrides will mean more funding for a number of local programs, including an expansion of the housing court to include Barnstable County in an effort help to stabilize housing.
Cape and Islands State Senator Julian Cyr heralded the overriding of the Governor’s vetoes to MassHealth Senior Care and MassHealth Nursing Home Supplemental Rates, saying that the move will ensure that older adults are able to access the long term care they need while remaining out of the hospital and engaged in their community.
“The Conference Committee worked diligently to put together a balanced budget that made targeted investments in local aid, housing, children and families, and healthcare,” said Cyr, “The Legislature’s budget was thoughtfully developed and fiscally responsible, and I am proud to restore funding to vital programs that support people in all corners of the Commonwealth.”
The vote also returned 1.9 million dollars for the Massachusetts Cultural Council, 7.5 million dollars for MassHealth Nursing Home Supplemental Rates, and 675 thousand dollars for Unaccompanied Homeless Youth Services.
Following the override, FY 2018’s budget will come in at more than 320 million dollars.
