State Senate Passes Nearly $40B Budget

massachusetts-state-house-300x198BOSTON (AP) — The Massachusetts Senate has passed a $39.5 billion budget that invests heavily in education and local aid, and funnels millions into the state’s opioid abuse crisis.

Sen. Karen Spilka, chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, says the budget passed late Thursday “reinforces our commitment to education at every level.”

The budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 includes $4.6 billion in aid to school districts, a $116 million increase.

It provides more than $223 million for the beleaguered Department of Children and Families to hire an additional 100 social workers and 125 social worker technicians; and more than $136 million for 150 new residential substance abuse treatment beds.

A conference committee will work out differences between the Senate and House budgets before it heads to the governor’s desk.
