Statehouse Hearing to Examine Court Ruling on Emissions

gavelBOSTON (AP) — Lawmakers are examining the impact of a recent court decision that found the state has failed to meet requirements for cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

The Senate Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change has scheduled an oversight hearing for Tuesday on the Supreme Judicial Court’s ruling from earlier this month.

The high court sided with environmental groups that sued Massachusetts for failing to adopt strict limits on emissions that are blamed for global warming. A 2008 law sets a goal of reducing emissions by 25 percent by the year 2020.

Sen. Marc Pacheco, a Taunton Democrat who chairs the committee, says state environmental officials and representatives of the Conservation Law Foundation — the group which brought the lawsuit — are among those who’ve been invited to testify at the hearing.
