State’s High Court Hears Bid To Block Question On Legal Pot

gavelBOSTON (AP) — A lawsuit before the state’s highest court seeks to block a proposed November ballot question that would legalize recreational marijuana use by adults.

The Supreme Judicial Court heard arguments Wednesday on the legal challenge brought by a group of Massachusetts residents. Their attorney, John Scheft, says voters who signed petitions in favor of the marijuana initiative were “significantly misled” about the potency of products that could become legal and were never explicitly told that high concentrations of THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana, could be added to food products sold in the state.

A lawyer for the state countered that the summary provided by the attorney general’s office was clear in providing a broad generalization of what the law would allow.

The justices did not immediately rule on the challenge.
