Steamship Authority Negotiates Parking Lot Lease with Falmouth

Woods HoleFALMOUTH – Three hundred parking spaces in Woods Hole are the subject of negotiation between the Steamship Authority and the town of Falmouth.

The authority has a long-term lease on the lot near Church Street that is at the terminus of the Shining Sea Bikeway. The lot is connected to the main Steamship Authority terminal lot by a two-lane road that passes under the Church Street bridge and winds along Great Harbor.

The end of the lease coincides with an upcoming major project: the $50,000 reconstruction of the Woods Hole terminal. That project will mean those parking spaces near Church Street, which make up the rear of the terminal lot, are critical for parking for both employees and ferry passengers.

As the 10-year lease nears its deadline in December, Steamship Authority General Manager Wayne Lamson says there is a next step.

The parking spaces cost the authority $210,000 in rent this year.

Lamson said he is working with Falmouth Selectmen to reach an agreement.

“The Town Manager is going to have discussions with selectmen throughout the rest of the year and I’m confident we’ll be able to come to some sort of reasonable agreement,” Lamson said.

Lamson said he is also working with local businesses about parking in Woods Hole.

“We’re looking at different options to work with the town to see how we can create more parking spaces within the village.”
