Steamship Authority Ready for Start of the Summer Season

BB_Nantucket_SteamshipAuthority_Summer2015HYANNIS – Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial start of summer Cape Cod, and the Steamship Authority is gearing up for a dramatic uptick in passengers.

For its routes between Woods Hole and Martha’s Vineyard and Hyannis to Nantucket, the company has already seen a five percent increase in advanced reservations and is also making plans for increased demand on Memorial Day.

Steamship Authority has chartered a private company that normally offers service from New York to Nantucket, to make one extra trip.

“We have asked them to run a trip from Nantucket back to Hyannis just to make sure we’re covering whatever extra demand there may be,” said Steamship Authority General Manager Wayne Lamson.

In addition, if taking a vehicle or the high speed ferry service, customers are reminded to make reservations.

Lamson also says that Steamship Authority’s new vessel, Woods Hole, is also expected to join the fleet in early June.

Currently the ship, which is replacing the freight ferry Governor, is undergoing sea trials and will likely begin its journey from Louisiana to be delivered by the end of the week, and will be a welcome addition.

“This will be a vessel that can operate on either route at any time of the year, so we think it’ll be a very versatile vessel,” Lamson said.
