WOODS HOLE – One of the Steamship Authority’s sidelined vessels returned to service Sunday after it was cleared by the Coast Guard.
The M/V Woods Hole was out of commission due to a broken propeller shaft. It was sent to the Fairhaven shipyard for repairs.
The boat line was left shorthanded late last week and over the weekend because the M/V Martha’s Vineyard was also taken out of service due to electrical problems. The vessel lost power on a trip between Martha’s Vineyard and Woods Hole two weekends ago and experienced a generator problem on Tuesday.
The M/V Martha’s Vineyard is scheduled to undergo a Coast Guard inspection on Monday and the Steamship Authority expects it to return to service on Tuesday.
The M/V Sankaty has been operating in place of the M/V Martha’s Vineyard.
Vehicle standby service has resumed, but the boat line still recommends those looking to travel with their cars make reservations.
The Steamship Authority borrowed a passenger-only vessel from Seastreak to handle some of the trips to and from Martha’s Vineyard over the weekend.
The Steamship Authority reports it does not anticipate having to cancel any more service due to mechanical issues.
