Stellwagen Bank Holds Film Fest on Tuesday Evenings

KA_Foggy Waters_Ocean_fog_mist_rain_022416_012SCITUATE – The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is hosting a film festival on Tuesday evenings until August 16.

The fest showcases programs that look at ocean issues that concern the national marine sanctuaries.

The films are about an hour long, start at 7 p.m. and are free to the public.

On August 2, the Sanctuary will screen “Lightning Strikes Twice: The Real Life Sequel to Moby Dick.

The film tells the story of a Massachusetts whaleship lost on a remote reef, one very unlucky captain and a team of archaeologists with the discovery of a lifetime.

“Tragedies in the Midst” will also be screened that day, which is an introduction to the shipwrecks of the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Lake Huron, an area known for extreme weather, treacherous waters and dense fog that has claimed over 200 ships.

On August 9, “Acid Test: The Global Challenge of Ocean Acidification” will be shown.

The film explains the other carbon problem, the changing water chemistry of the ocean and its potential effects on marine life and humans.

Also, “Nature’s Keepers” will be shown that day as well, which is a French television documentary about citizen science and environmental protection focusing on Massachusetts with a segment on the sanctuary’s Seabird Steward program.

The final film will be screened on August 16, titled “Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Adventures: America’s Underwater Treasure”.
