“Stormy” Mayo Launches Boat in Provincetown

istar02PROVINCETOWN – In what its builder is calling a community project, a new 36-foot wooden schooner is now in the water at Macmillan Pier in Provincetown.

The boat was built by Charles “Stormy” Mayo of the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies with a lot of help from his friends.

Construction took several decades, but Mayo took up to 12 years off from the project. Mayo says the design of the boat was inspired by boats that were popular long ago.

The name, “Istar,” was the name of one of Mayo’s father’s boats. Mayo said he hope to have the boat rigged and sailing in the next several weeks, after finding enough lead for ballast.
