Zachary’s Pub in Mashpee
MASHPEE – Cape Cod’s only strip club is no more, and and calls for an encore don’t seem likely.
Zachary’s Pub officially closed on June 3, when the owner of the former club, Richard Halpern, forfeited his adult-entertainment license to selectmen at Mashpee Town Hall.
With the surrender of the license, Mashpee Town Manager Rodney Collins noted that anyone interested in reopening the strip club would need to complete the application process for a license, which requires approval from the board.
“There has been a sale of the establishment and there have also been a lot inquiries relative to the status of its license. I just want to report to the entire board that the proprietor did drop off the licenses to my office, in hand. I handed them over to the administrative assistant and I respectfully request that the board accept this,” Collins said.
“If there is a lapse, any person would have to come back to the board and re-apply and go through the entire process.”
Halpern listed two grantees in the deal – Juan Marichal, of Hyannis, and the River Bend Village Trust. Marichal, who works at Seaport Village Realty, plans to convert the property into apartments to rent out.
As Zachary’s was located in a residential area of town, the next strip club in Mashpee, if there ever is one, will not be permitted to conduct business in a similar area.
Zachary’s Pub opened its doors before the town’s zoning bylaws had any mention of adult-entertainment venues such as strip clubs. The current zoning ordinance restricts such establishments to commercial zones only, such as the Mashpee Commons.
