fire department patchFALMOUTH – The Falmouth Fire Department is reaching out to residents to update them on what they are calling “a large stubborn fire” that has been burning for over a week at Blacksmith Shop Farms located at 716 Blacksmith Shop Road in Hatchville.

“The Falmouth Fire Department and the property owner have been working together to extinguish this fire. The fire began from spontaneous combustion process occurring in an approximate two-acre stump dump area on the property,” according to fire officials.

Fire officials say, the extinguishment process, including large diameter hose streams working with large earth moving equipment may take some time.

Residents in the direct neighborhoods are advised to keep their windows closed.

“We have completed atmospheric testing in the affected neighborhoods and readings and will continue to monitor the atmosphere in the adjacent neighborhoods to insure safe levels are maintained,” officials said.

The fire department has altered its firefighting tactics so that road closures will no longer be necessary.

The Falmouth Fire Rescue Department is advising residents that it is taking all possible measures to extinguish the fire as rapidly as possible and are working diligently along wit the property owner to mitigate the situation.
