Substance Abuse on the Vineyard Being Addressed

DrugsOAK BLUFFS –  Members of the Substance Abuse Working Group on Martha’s Vineyard are considering the impact of substance abuse and delivery of addiction services is releasing the results of their findings; the study has been underway since May.

Amy Houghton is a spokesman for the group, she says they are seeking a variety of advice from addiction experts.

For example, the SAFE Coalition in Norfolk County and the East Bridgewater Police Department recently addressed the group to discuss their experiences.

“I think what we’ve learned is that as  we come together  we can make some real change that need to happen and we can identify and get some ideas from other folks that are ahead of us in this area. ”

The forty plus member group is comprised of medical, law enforcement and social services personnel, it was created in response to opioid deaths on the Vineyard.

Some of the ideas being floated include a drop in center for addicts and recovery coaches who would ride along with police to reach out to recent Narcan recipients.

The next meeting of the Group will be held at 10 Thursday morning in Oak Bluffs.
