DENNIS – Police departments in Falmouth, Yarmouth and Dennis will be taking part in National Night Tuesday night.

National Night Out is an annual community building campaign that promotes police and community partnerships to make neighborhoods safer, according to local police departments who are holding the event.

“We’re supposed to encourage a safe neighborhoods and develop the relationship between the police and the citizens that we are working in this together,” said Dennis Police Officer Nick Patsavos, who helps to organize the Dennis event. “We are partners in fighting crime and making a safe community.”

Dennis Police Officer Ryan Carr says the National Night Out event is an opportunity for police to get to know members of the community.

“Things change. Needs change. Communities change,” said Dennis Police Officer Ryan Carr, who also organizes the Dennis event. “It’s important that we stay on top of it. It’s great from a community standpoint to get to know what the community has to offer, what their resources are and what we do.”

He said, National Night Out provides an opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances and enhance relationships. The events will include food, activities for children, police and fire vehicles and demonstrations and more.

Dennis is not the only police department on the Cape to be holding National Night Out events.

Yarmouth police will be holding an event Tuesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sandy Pond Recreational Area on Buck Island Road and Falmouth’s event will be held at Falmouth Police Headquarters Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

“People get to meet us out of the uniform in a relaxed atmosphere. It’s fun. We talk and get to know each other,” Carr said. “And while that’s being accomplished we understand what the needs are and how we tailor our approach on this whole concept of community policing.”

Carr said these events can help to restore relationships with departments and communities after recent incidents that have garnered much media attention.

“Nationwide there has been a lot of negative stuff for the police and we want to [point out] that there are bad apples in every bushel,” he said.
