EASTHAM – A presentation by Cape Cod National Seashore (CCNS) Superintendent George Price updated attendees as to the state of the over 43,000-acre parklands.
The talk highlighted the CCNS-National Park Service joint centennial celebration events which were held in August, facility improvements to the Penniman house, the Marconi parking lot and another lot at Race Point.
Other 2016 highlights include the completion of the bicycle and pedestrian master plan and turf management at the Highland Links golf course.
Price said he is proud of the inter-agency cooperation needed to complete these efforts, but there are many more projects in line which will keep CCNS staff busy heading into next year.
“With all the facilities we have, 300 structures, 44,000 acres, 60-something miles of roads in trails, it really has been a challenge to keep all the balls in the air,” he said. “But I think visitors will see largely facilities which are pretty well maintained.”
Looking forward, Price said the erosion at Nauset Light beach area is problematic. He said the seashore will now focus on pulling apart the septic system, demolishing the bathhouse, and exploring new ways to provide access to the beach.
The Red Maple Swamp trail in Eastham, which has stayed closed for six years due to a broken boardwalk, will be repaired incrementally to save on costs.
Also on slate for completion in 2017 is the completion of the amphitheater at the Salt Pond Visitor Center. Price said he expects that to be open by next summer.
