CHATHAM – Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has three World Series rings, but nothing compares to having a shark named after you.
The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy has named a 15-foot male shark tagged earlier this month “Big Papi,” in honor of the retiring designated hitter.
“We’ve been waiting all year to name a shark in honor of @davidortiz,” the Conservancy tweeted over the weekend. “Meet ‘Big Papi’ a 15′ male tagged on 9-9-2016.”
It’s not the first time the organization has looked to Boston sports to find names for tagged animals. “Brady” was a shark tagged last September, named after Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady.
