Tales of Cape Cod to Host ‘An Evening of Jazz and History’ to Kick Off Season

BARNSTABLE – Tales of Cape Cod has announced their kick-off to the season with a special program this month.

There will be a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception with the accompaniment of contemporary jazz great Bart Weisman and his Smooth Jazz Group, featuring Bart and Steve Hambleton on drums and Ron Ormsby on bass.

Following the reception, John Basile will present the history of Cape Cod Jazz from Colombo to the Columns. Basile, BartWeisman, and Ron Ormsby will be available to sign Basile’s book which will be offered for purchase.

Basile will tell stories about beloved and much missed Cape Cod based jazz greats such as Lou Colombo, Dave McKenna, Bobby Hackett, and Cape Cod’s “First Lady of Jazz” Marie Marcus.

He will detail the history that made Cape Cod a music destination soon after the first jazz notes hit the peninsula early in its genre.  The Bournehurst-on-the-Canal, the Snuggery in Hyannis, the Atlantic House in Provincetown and the Columns in Dennis all hosted the top bands.

Basile is the long time editor of the Barnstable Register and was also a radio newscaster for WOCB and WQRC for more than a decade.  He was, at one time, president of the Cape Cod Jazz Society.

“Bart Weisman is terrific at presenting jazz-he puts on such a great show…he’s the future of the music,” said Basile.

Weisman performs with his jazz groups all over Cape Cod. He also teaches drums and jazz at the Cape Conservatory and is the Jazz Band Director at Sturgis Charter School.  He has worked with many musicians such as J. Geils, Molly Ringwald, Bill Stritch and others.

Tickets can be obtained at the door, with admission priced at $20. Parking will be available on the street, at Sturgis Library or at St. Mary’s Church.

The event will be held on Monday, April 29 6:00 p.m. at Tales of Cape Cod, which is located at the Olde Colonial Courthouse on Route 6A in Barnstable Village.
