HYANNIS – A contingent from Barnstable’s twin city in England—Barnstaple—is on Cape Cod this week and paid a visit to Town Hall.

Town and tourism officials have arranged for the group to visit some of the Cape’s top attractions and historic sites.

An ice cream social featuring Cape Cod Creamery ice cream was held for the group at Barnstable Town Hall Monday.

Each member of the visiting group was given locally made saltwater taffy and fudge, as well as gift bags from the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.

A group from the Cape, including Town Manager Tom Lynch, traveled to Barnstaple, England last year in honor of Barnstable’s 375th anniversary and photos from that trip, featuring some of the same British people now visiting the Cape, were projected on a screen during the social.

Alan Gracie, chairman of the Barnstaple Twinning Committee, said it is his first time on Cape Cod and he and the rest of the group are already enjoying the 10-day trip, which will include visits to Nantucket and Boston.

“There are of course similarities. There are all these familiar names of towns around here: Truro, Falmouth, Taunton, and Bridgewater, They are all home names for us,” he said. “It just reminds us of the fact that 300 years ago these courageous settlers set out from the west country and crossed the Atlantic named their new villages after their hometowns.”
