SANDWICH – The death of an 18-year-old camp counselor at Camp Burgess in Sandwich is under investigation by the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s office.

The teen, found unresponsive in his bed Thursday morning, was identified by the district attorney’s office as Neal J. Tompkins. His hometown was not immediately known.

A statement from O’Keefe’s office said there was no indication of foul play. The state medical examiner will conduct an autopsy.

According to a statement issued today from South Shore YMCA, leadership at Camp Burgess and Hayward have begun to reach out to grief counselors to bring on-site and are encouraging camper parents to allow campers to stay at Camp through the week, where they’ll have access to grief counselors, and the support of the Camp community to grieve and share and offer some closure.

South Shore YMCA officials also added that after a very preliminary examination, the Massachusetts State Police medical examiner expects the counselor passed away of natural causes in his sleep.

“The South Shore YMCA and Camp Burgess & Hayward extend our deepest sympathies to the family of this counselor. Please join us in keeping them in our thoughts and prayers,” the statement says.

Camp Burgess, operated by the South Shore YMCA, is one of two camps on Spectacle Pond. According to the Y’s website, Burgess is an overnight camp that offers one and two-week sessions for boys ages 7 to 16.

Burgess was founded in 1928 and sits across the pond from Camp Hayward, their sister camp for girls, founded in 1961.
