BOURNE – The Barnstable County Correctional Facility and Sheriff James Cummings welcomed guests from the Volunteer State last week.

Law enforcement officers and officials from Knox County, Tennessee visited the facility to learn about its Vivitrol program. The drug is an opioid and alcohol blocker which reduces cravings.

Eight Knox County officials spent a day at the facility gathering data from staff and impressions from several soon-to-be recipients of the drug.

“What makes this program work is the leadership provided by the sheriff and his staff to make a positive change in these broken lives,” said Lee Tramel, the chief administrator in Knox County’s Sheriff Office.

Knox County District Attorney Charme Allen said it’s “extremely helpful to us in our planning process [to implement a program.]”

The program at the Barnstable Country Correctional Facility began in 2012 and 220 inmates have been given injections upon their release. The shots reduce the cravings for about a month and follow-up shots are administered at sites outside of the prison.

The facility also welcomed visitors from around the country last week to learn about another program at the prison, the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Initiative.

The program has been operating at the correctional facility for the last 21 years. The program runs out of a dedicated housing unit at the facility and includes educational and treatment components and peer-group interaction.

The tours brought officials in from as far away as Guam and American Samoa.
