Tevyaw Named Acting Superintendent of Cape Cod National Seashore

EASTHAM – The National Park Service has named a temporary replacement for Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent George Price, who is retiring next week.

Deputy Superintendent Kathy Tevyaw will take over as acting superintendent starting Thursday.

Price says Tevyaw is very familiar with park’s operations after serving as his number two since 2009.

“She’s been involved with all the good things that you see out here, whether it’s the completion of the bath house, whether it’s the road work, whether it’s the way we handle different things,” Price said. “So it’s certainly in very capable hands.”

“As deputy superintendent, they often describe that position as the alter ego of the superintendent, so she has had the same authority and responsibility so she is very familiar with what she is stepping into,” Price said.

Tevyaw has worked with the Park Service since 1991 starting as a Seasonal Park Ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park.

She has also held positions at Lowell National Historical Park, Gettysburg, Eisenhower Farm, along with serving as an Educational Specialist for the Northeast Regional Office.

Tevyaw also served as Acting Superintendent for the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park and Roger Williams National Memorial.

Tevyaw will oversee many construction projects at the National Seashore including the restoration of the Salt Pond Visitor Center amphitheater, the Herring Cove North Parking Lot and trail improvements, including the Red Maple Swamp Trail.

The Park Service’s Northeast Regional Office will manage the selection process for the next superintendent.

Price has served as superintendent of the National Seashore since February of 2005. His last day will be Friday.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here,” Price said.

Price has spent almost 44 years with the Park Service. He started at a revolutionary war site in Morristown, New Jersey in 1973.

He moved up to Massachusetts for a two-year assignment in 1978.

“My family and I have really had a terrific time, but as they say you’ll know when it’s time to pull the plug and that time came for me,” Price said. “And I’ve really appreciated the people that I worked with and the community and the Park Service all of these years.”
