HYANNIS – The 2019 CapeFlyer service has come to an end and officials are hailing the weekend commuter train’s seventh season as a success.
The train saw a 6.2 percent increase from last year and has seen an increase in each of its seven seasons.
“We just completed our seventh season, which is hard to believe, and we had a 6.2 percent ridership increase from last year which is consistent with all seven years, we’ve improved our ridership year in and year out,” said Regional Transit Authority Administrator Thomas Cahir.
“So it’s just been a wonderful experience and we’re very happy with 2019.”
New for this year was an added stop near the Bourne train bridge which was highly successful.
Twenty-five percent of riders destined for Hyannis used to get off in Buzzards Bay. With the new stop, 40 percent get off in Bourne.
“The genuine enthusiasm expressed this year about having a south side canal stop has been incredible and our numbers have verified that it’s been successful,” said Cahir.
“It’s been a really wonderful thing and I think a benefit to the service.”
The stop proved to be so popular that the MBTA had to add another bi-level car to the CapeFlyer in August to accommodate the increased number of passengers.
The CapeFlyer provides weekend train service that runs between Boston’s South Station and Hyannis, with stops in Braintree, Brockton, Middleborough, Wareham, Buzzards Bay and Bourne from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Having already generated thousands of dollars in revenue, the CapeFlyer has proven successful since it began in 2012 and looks to keeping getting stronger as they already prepare for the 2020 season.
