LOS ANGELES – “The Finest Hours,” the Disney film based on the 1950’s rescue of 32 sailors off the coast of Chatham, pulled in $10.3 million during its opening weekend, coming in fourth place at the North American box office.
The movie chronicles what is considered to be the greatest small boat rescue in the history of the U.S. Coast Guard, which took place off Chatham during a Nor’easter on February 18, 1952.
The film is based on the book co-written by Barnstable resident Casey Sherman.
Estimates peg “The Finest Hours” budget at $70-$80 million.
Kung Fu Panda 3 came out on top with $41 million.
Holdovers “The Revenant” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” took second and third place with $12.4 million and $10.8 million, respectively.
