The “Ghostess with the Mostess” to Highlight Cape Symphony New Year’s Celebration

Nixon - 1HYANNIS – It will be a star-studded event when the Cape Symphony hosts its annual New Year’s Day Party at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center in Hyannis.

Along with the usual fare of musical numbers, traditional polkas, waltzes and marches, a Hollywood legend whose voice lit up the screen in some of biggest musicals of the 1950s and 60s will highlight the performance.

Marni Nixon, dubbed “The Ghostess with the Mostest” by Time Magazine, was not in the credits, but whether it was Natalie Wood in West Side Story, Deborah Kerr in The King and I, or Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, the soaring voice that made those musical numbers come alive belonged to Nixon, not the aforementioned Hollywood starlets. It was a Hollywood secret that eventually leaked.

“Gradually word got around and so I got to be known for that even though my main career at that time was concert singing and opera,” Nixon said.

The performance for the New Year’s Day party begins at 3 p.m., and along with Nixon, the Cape Symphony will also welcome world renowned Thereminist Pamelia Stickney and Broadway star Sarah Uriarte Berry during the annual celebration.
