The Story Of Chatham’s Holiday History Is Told

CHATHAM – From now until December 23rd, visitors to the Atwood House and Museum will see how Chatham celebrated the holidays from the time of the very first settlers through the roaring twenties.

A lot of research, down to the smallest details, was done to make sure each period was decorated appropriately.

A scene from the 1800-1850 period shows a modest tree with decorations that included nuts and small pine cones.  Because of the way evergreens grew at the time, they were placed on tables or mantles.

Ornaments imported from Europe started to appear during the Civil War.

During the roaring 20’s, when everyone was drinking, smoking and listening to jazz, the tree represented the excesses of the period with tinsel and glittering glass balls with candles.

The displays are much more than just trees and visitors are sure to be delighted.  The Atwood House and Museum will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 1-4.  It is located on Stage Harbor Road.
