Theater Coalition Celebrates in Grand Style

COTUIT – Leaders from the Cape’s arts community celebrated a milestone last night: the 20th anniversary of the Cape and Islands Theater Coalition.

The fundraising gala at Cotuit Center for the Arts featured performances from four of the five founding theaters of the coalition.

David Kaplan, executive director of the coalition, was greeting arrivals at the door of the event and said it is a special night.

“It’s important every year because it’s a celebration of theater across the Cape and Islands,” he said.”We have 26 theaters and it’s nice for everyone to get together and acknowledge all the culture and the great theater that we have here.”

From those five first members, the coalition has grown to 26 theaters from Wareham to Provincetown, as well as theaters on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

The coalition was founded with support from Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank and David Willard, community relations director for Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, Kaplan said, and the evening was an opportunity to celebrate their support as well.

Kaplan said, “Tonight we’re honoring those five theaters, the bank and David Willard for what they did 20 years ago.”

Nina Schuessler from Cape Cod Theatre Company, home of Harwich Junior Theatre, gave a brief speech last night full of thank yous.

“Thank you to those who come to the theater to sit in our seats and watch our shows; to all the actors who perform on our stages; to the dedicated stage managers, operators  and backstage crews for our shows, to all of the set, costume, lighting, sound and prop designers;  directors, choreographers, musicians;  the playwrights and the reviewers and everyone who writes about us.

“Thank you to our box office people, our ushers and house managers; our Board members and officers; the volunteers who host our events and serve  refreshments, paint sets and  launder costumes, interns and apprentices, the  businesses who sponsor our shows and grant makers, foundations who support us and to the parents who drive their children and wait hours on end.

“You are so very welcome here. We hope you will come back often and bring your friends and families. We are here because of you and we thank you,” Schuessler said.
