Third Recreational Marijuana Shop Opens in Massachusetts

SALEM, Mass. (AP) — The third recreational marijuana shop in Massachusetts is now open for business.

To ease traffic concerns, only customers who previously booked appointments were allowed on Saturday to enter the Alternative Therapies Group facility in Salem. It’s currently not a first-come, first-serve establishment.

Boston 25 News reports that barriers and traffic signs were set up Friday evening in preparation for the grand opening.

Alternative Therapies is now the closest recreational dispensary to Boston. Two other recreational marijuana shops opened last month in Leicester and Northampton. Those two have generated more than $7 million in sales. They’re the first recreational marijuana shops on the U.S. East Coast.

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission on Thursday approved final licenses for four additional retail marijuana businesses in Fall River, Hudson, Pittsfield and Great Barrington.

Verilife in Wareham is scheduled to open Tuesday.
