Thousands Ruled Ineligible for Mass. Medicaid

ThinkstockPhotos-164939541BOSTON (AP) — State figures show that tens of thousands of people have been removed from Massachusetts’ Medicaid program during the first phase of a sweeping eligibility review.

Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration has been trying to squeeze $761 million in savings from MassHealth. That’s the government-run health insurance program for about 1.7 million poor and disabled residents.

Eligibility checks are required annually under federal law but haven’t been performed in Massachusetts since 2013. They resumed earlier this year.

Officials tell The Associated Press that while most of the people deemed ineligible will have access to subsidized private insurance through the state’s health connector, about 5 percent won’t qualify for that coverage.
