Three Fall Town Meetings Wrap Up

DENNIS – At Fall Town Meetings this week, Dennis, Eastham and Mashpee voters debated a number of issues from marijuana sales to new sports courts.

In Dennis Tuesday night, voters got behind a proposal to request special legislation that would create a town Department of Finance, if approved by the state the measure would combine the town’s assessing, treasurer collector and accounting departments, streamlining those operations. Town accountant Mary Anne Gibbs is expected to head the new department. Voters in Dennis also agreed to appropriate $57,150 to refurbish three basketball courts at the Johnny Kelly Recreation Area.

On Monday night, Eastham residents unanimously approved allocating $390,500 to go toward the town’s share of asbestos cleanup at the old Tri Town Septage Treatment facility in Orleans. The town is splitting that cost with Orleans and Brewster. Voters did not approve an idea to create a five member Board of Water Commissioners.

In Mashpee the biggest article on the Warrant was a proposal to ban recreational pot shops in town, that measure was defeated. Residents did however put in place a restriction that would limit retail recreational marijuana operations to fewer than 20% of the number of liquor licenses in town. Mashpee already has a medical marijuana facility in town.
