SANDWICH – The National Marine Life Center released three seal pups back into the waters at Scusset Beach in Sandwich on Wednesday night.

Hundreds of people gathered at the beach to watch the release of the seals, who were transported in crates from the Center in Buzzards Bay.

The seal pups, named “Johnny Appleseal”, “Jane Goodseal” and “Sealvia Earle”, were rescued this spring after they had been separated from their mothers.

“It’s just a little bit that we can do to kind of mitigate the situation and help give them back and so it feels really good to see them going out,” said Center Executive Director Kathy Zagzebski. “A little scary, a little bittersweet, this is where they live and this is what they’re supposed to do.”

Officials believe that their moms may have been scared away permanently by humans, causing the separation.

Over the past few months, the Center’s staff and volunteers taught the pups how to swim and eat fish.

“When people can connect with an animal and see an animal like this, they can see the importance of the animal in the ecosystem, they can see the importance of conservation of having a nice, beautiful, clean beach like this and spaces where animals can be wild and people can enjoy them,” said Zagzebski.

The NMLC held a release last week for rehabilitated sea turtles at Craigville Beach in Centerville.
