Thunderstorms, Lightning Hammer Cape Cod

ORLEANS – A line of strong thunderstorms hammered portions of Cape Cod Thursday morning, taking down power lines and flooding roads.

The Lower and Outer Cape appear to have been hit the hardest with reports of significant flooding on Route 6-A in Orleans.

Route 6 was temporarily closed in both directions between Exit 12 and the Orleans Rotary after a utility line came down on the road.

There were also reports of lightning strikes in the area that likely caused multiple reports of houses catching on fire.

According to Eversource’s outage map, about 2,400 customers were without power, mostly on the Lower Cape.

The National Weather Service in Taunton issued a flood advisory for sections of Cape Cod until early afternoon.

Spotters for the weather service reported damage from downed trees in Orleans and Chatham.

Because of the excessive rainfall, the Town of Orleans closed  Town Cove/Nauset Estuary, Pleasant Bay and Cape Cod Bay to all shellfishing until further notice.

There were no initial reports of injuries from the storm.
