Tips to Avoid Hunters During Wooded Walks

BUZZARDS BAY – While deer season is over, the Buzzards Bay Coalition has offered several tips to avoid hunters while other seasons are active.

The winter features open seasons on opossums, rabbits, squirrels and raccoons, followed by another turkey season in the spring.

It can benefit hikers and walkers to wear “blaze orange,” the brightly-colored vests and accoutrements which makes it easier for gunmen and bowmen to see them.

Pets can be outfitted with this color, too, and should always be kept on leashes.

The coalition also recommends that walkers read up on whether hunting is even allowed on the property. Horshoe Mill in Wareham is an example of a property which does allow hunting.

It is also recommended that pedestrians stay on marked trails, and to make their presence known through talking and whistling.
