Tom Lynch Leaves Five-Year Post as Town Manager

Flash MobBARNSTABLE – Tom Lynch had an emotional last day at work Thursday, as he departed the Town Manager position after a five-year term.

Lynch gathered with family and coworkers at Town Hall as they brought him support and well-wishes. A photo slideshow of his year as Barnstable manager, housing authority director, assembly of delegates member and State Representative was shown.

At one point, a flash mob assembled outside to further support Lynch.

He said that, while there are projects he wished he could’ve made further progress on, he feels confident in his administration’s contributions.

“Each year there are challenges that you don’t expect,” he said. “But we’ve been able to respond to each of those, the staff doesn’t get stuck in their ways, and when there is a crisis, they’re thinking about what to do next.”

Lynch has held the position for five years and served as the assistant town manager for the three years before that.

Lynch said over that time he has built strong relationships with the town’s residents.

“I have a very satisfied feeling that I’ve been out there working hard doing my best,” Lynch said. “And worked on a lot of issues with an awful lot of citizens.”

He said the town has had a vigorous capital improvement plan which has been between $20 million and $29 million each year.

Lynch said he is going to enjoy the beaches, spend some time boating and experience the activities held across the entire Cape before worrying about what the next chapter of his life will be whether it’s work or volunteering.

Lynch grew up in North Attleboro where he graduated high school. He vacationed with his family on the Cape starting in the mid-1950 before his parents bought a home in 1959 in North Falmouth.

Lynch feels the town is in good shape moving forward with Mark Ells as a replacement. Ells is the current assistant town manager and was selected unanimously by the town council in May to replace Lynch.
