Town to Apply to Lease Nobska Light with Non-profits

lighthouse10FALMOUTH – The Town of Falmouth is finalizing a proposal to license Nobka Lighthouse from the Coast Guard with the help of local non-profits.

The four groups who will combine resources to run the lighthouse as a museum and educational center with exhibits are Woods Hole Historical Museum, Falmouth Historical Society, Highfield Museums and Gardens and Woods Hole Community Association.

Falmouth Town Manager Julian Suso said he and Assistant Town Manager Heather Harper are finalizing the document to send to the Coast Guard by the end of this week, well before the due date January 5.

“The Board of Selectmen have authorized transmitting an application requesting that the town be extended the license to operate the physical facilities,” Suso said. That includes the grounds but does not include the safety items, the lighthouse light itself and fog horn.

“We’re putting finishing touches on that package and it will be transmitted later this week to the US Coast Guard for their consideration,” he said.

Suso said the four non-profits would be key to running what will operate as a new non-profit featuring the lighthouse and its history.

“They have joined together in an extraordinary partnership,” he said.

The non-profits, Suso said, “would be providing educational and related public access activities for the Nobska lighthouse property to ensure that the community treasure continues to be available to the public,” he said.
